Anna Haataja, Finland won the women’s race after finishing third in the Sprint and Joey Hadorn, Switzerland took his second gold of the Championships, in a gruelling Long Distance race at Val Müstair today.

The Swiss winners have almost the same summary of the race: a very good one. And of course it was – they both became world champions! Simona Aebersold didn’t know of any mistakes. Joey Hadorn soon heard about one decision he lost some seconds on, but also he had to take the biggest jump on to the podium.

Simona Aebersold and Joey Hadorn provided the perfect start for the home team in the Sprint race at Scuol, Switzerland today. Aebersold’s victory was emphatic, whilst Hadorn was the fastest of four Swiss in the top six.

The European Championships ended with an incredibly tight Relay competition. The last-leg runners were not at all certain what was happening.

Finland won the women’s relay, courtesy of an exceptional last-leg run by Merja Rantanen. The silver medals went to Sweden and the bronze to Russia.

Switzerland showed their strength in depth in the men’s relay today, their on paper second team taking the gold medals and the first team finishing fifth. Norway and the Czech Republic are the men’s silver and bronze medallists after a tight-fought race.

Matthias Kyburz has fulfilled his big goal in the Czech Republic. And Tove Alexandersson didn’t take a step without knowing where she was.

Tove Alexandersson, Sweden and Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland both won their second individual gold medal of the Championships in the Middle Distance Final at Černá Voda, Czech Republic today. Alexandersson put on an impressive display of high-speed orienteering, winning by 2.13 and the fastest throughout. Kyburz also enjoyed a comfortable victory – by 34 seconds.

Switzerland had two victories and two second-placings in the Middle Distance qualification heats today, with 5 more athletes qualifying comfortably for the final – but 3 of their athletes ended below the cut-off line – including European Long Distance Champion Daniel Hubmann.

For Tove Alexandersson, today’s race was a historic triumph. For Daniel Hubmann it was yet another gold medal in the Long Distance.
