Joey Hadorn, Switzerland heading for his second gold medal
Anna Haataja, Finland won the women’s race after finishing third in the Sprint and Joey Hadorn, Switzerland took his second gold of the Championships, in a gruelling Long Distance race at Val Müstair today.
This was one step up for Haataja, who took the silver medal in the equivalent race last year in Norway. She won by 1.50 ahead of the Swiss athlete Valerie Aebischer, with another Swiss, Sofie Bachmann taking the bronze a further 1.03 slower. Norway scored well with four athletes in the top eleven on the 6.5 km course with 310 m climb. Yesterday’s winner Simona Aebersold finished twelfth.

The men’s race over 8.8 km with 450 m climb was an exact repeat, in terms of medals, of yesterday’s Sprint! The Swiss gold and silver medalists, who finished 0.51 apart, both improved immensely on last year when they were 52nd and 47th respectively. Last year’s silver medalist, Simon Hector from Sweden, finished fourth today.
Tuesday is a well-deserved rest day, and competition resumes on Wednesday morning with the Middle Qualification heats.
