EOC Middle Qualification: Up and down day for Switzerland
Posted on | May 26, 2016 | Category: Arena, News

Switzerland had two victories and two second-places in the Middle Distance qualification heats today, with 5 more athletes qualifying comfortably for the final – but 3 of their athletes ended below the cut-off line – including European Long Distance Champion Daniel Hubmann.
Judith Wyder and Matthias Kyburz kept up the performance level they have shown all week, winning their heats by 24 and 33 seconds respectively and both of them the fastest heat winners. Second places were scored by Julia Gross and Martin Hubmann. Debutant Lisa Holer was 22nd in the heat won by Cat Taylor, Great Britain; the third women’s victory went to the very experienced home athlete Dana Šafka Brožková.
Men’s heat A, won by Johan Runesson SWE by 32 seconds over Martin Hubmann, ended dramatically when last starter Daniel Hubmann failed to qualify along with his compatriot Andreas Rueedlinger. Hubmann was 9 seconds out of qualifying position and Rueedlinger 8 seconds out. In heat B the winner was Carl Godager Kaas, Norway with a 3-second lead, tightest of the day. Here Martins Sirmais LAT, EOC Middle silver medallist in 2006 and 2008, failed to qualify. In heat C, where Matthias Kyburz was the winner, Mårten Boström FIN, Sprint World Champion in 2013, didn’t qualify.
Fifty-one athletes, seventeen from each heat, qualify for each of the Finals tomorrow. The men’s final starts at 1345 and the women’s at 1530 CET.
