A dramatic women’s Middle distance final ended with victory for Minna Kauppi, Finland by 32 seconds over the new young star from Sweden, Tove Alexandersson. Tatiana Riabkina, Russia took the bronze medal, 54 seconds slower than Alexandersson.

Thierry Gueorgiou lost no time in demonstrating his ability to defend the Middle distance crown yet again, winning his heat by a whole 53 seconds over no less than yesterday’s heat winner and European Champion at Middle and Long distance, Olav Lundanes, Norway.

The Middle distance qualification races were held today on a warm and sunny day on typical Jura terrain – quite stony and steep, with some thick vegetation too to slow the competitors. 16/07/2012 || World Orienteering Championships being staged in Sports Capital of the World ||News||
The Opening Ceremony of the World Championships took place after the Sprint Final and before the Sprint prize-giving, an arrangement that ensured that all the athletes could be present (no quarantine restrictions). Athletes were led in parade by a jazz band and each country’s team was headed by a local girl or boy who had competed in a youth championships in that part of Lausanne earlier in the day.
