World Orienteering Championships, Middle qualification: Alexandersson wins heat
Posted on | July 16, 2012 | Category: News
The Middle distance qualification races were held today on a warm and sunny day on typical Jura terrain – quite stony and steep, with some thick vegetation too to slow the competitors. In all, a quite different technical and physical challenge to that they encountered in the Long qualification yesterday.
Tove Alexandersson, fresh from successes in the Junior World Championships, came quickly to terms with the new challenges and won her heat by 1.39, the biggest lead in the women’s heats, over one of yesterday’s heat winners, Minna Kauppi.
The other two heat winners were both at the head of the results lists yesterday too. Home star Simone Niggli was 0.37 faster than the French athlete Amelie Chataing, whilst Russia’s Tatyana Riabkina was 8 seconds faster than Lina Strand, Sweden.
Men’s summary to follow later.
