The men’s relay title went to France after a dominating and near-faultless run by Thierry Gueorgiou on the last leg, where he ran away from the opposition and set up a comfortable winning margin. Norway took the silver medals and Sweden the bronze.
20/08/2011 || Amazing women’s relay ends in sprint victory for Finland ||News||
Finland won the women’s relay in a sprint finish by 1 second over the Czech Republic, with Sweden close behind in bronze medal position, in a quite amazing race in the hot sunshine at Le Grand Revard, France today.
19/08/2011 || Second gold medal for Gueorgiou ||News||
The large French crowd watching the middle distance final in hot sunshine today had plenty to cheer about, with Thierry Gueorgiou winning his second gold medal and Francois Gonon taking sixth place. A very close race for the other medal positions resulted in silver going to Peter Öberg, Sweden, 2 seconds faster than bronze medallist Olav Lundanes.
19/08/2011 || Helena Jansson powers to middle distance victory ||News||
Helena Jansson, Sweden, took the World Championships middle distance title today by 1 minute 16 seconds from Ida Bobach, Denmark, who is still a junior and won all three individual gold medals in the Junior World Championships earlier in the summer. The bronze medal went to Judith Wyder, Switzerland, 45 seconds slower than Ida Bobach.

A ceremony was held today in the finals race arena to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the IOF. The International Orienteering Federation was formed in May 1961 with 10 member nations, all European; now there are 73 members on 5 continents.

The IOF Council has awarded the World Ski Orienteering Championships 2013 to Kazakhstan. The events will be held in Ridder, East Kazakhstan, at the end of February and beginning of March 2013.

Representatives from a record 45 nations attended the Presidents’ Conference – a meeting held every alternate year, between IOF Congress years, at the World Orienteering Championships.

Great Britain has been appointed organiser of the World Orienteering Championships 2015. The Championships will be held in Inverness, Scotland. ”It was a tough decision between two very good candidates, Sweden and Great Britain”, IOF Senior Vice President Marcel Schiess says.
