The large French crowd watching the middle distance final in hot sunshine today had plenty to cheer about, with Thierry Gueorgiou winning his second gold medal and Francois Gonon taking sixth place. A very close race for the other medal positions resulted in silver going to Peter Öberg, Sweden, 2 seconds faster than bronze medallist Olav Lundanes.
Early leader for some time was Graham Gristwood, Great Britain, but the pace hotted up gradually and once Thierry Gueorgiou was under way he set a clearly faster tempo than anyone else. Peter Öberg in particular stuck with the pace for a while, but Gueorgiou proved to be stronger than all others and finished with a winning margin of 2 minutes 21 seconds.
Ukraine and Lithuania respectively will be delighted with the performances of Olexandr Kratov and Jonas Vytautas Gvildys, who finished in 4th and 5th places.
As usual full results are shown in the Live section of the event website www.woc2011.fr, and further reports and pictures will appear in the ‘Around the Arena’ section of this website, at the foot of this page.
Tomorrow is the final day of the Championships, when the relays will be held. The women’s relay takes place between 13:15 and 15:00 and the men’s between 15:15 and 17:00.
