Helena Jansson, Sweden, took the World Championships middle distance title today by 1 minute 16 seconds from Ida Bobach, Denmark, who is still a junior and won all three individual gold medals in the Junior World Championships earlier in the summer. The bronze medal went to Judith Wyder, Switzerland, 45 seconds slower than Ida Bobach.
Ida Bobach started in the first half of the field and had a near-faultless run after a slightly slow start out to the first control. She was the leader in the arena for some considerable time until Helena Jansson, with one of the last start times, powered in to take the title. Both Natalia Vinogradova, Russia and last starter Minna Kauppi, Finland, threatened the medal positions, but both lost time on the final loop of the course.
It was a good day for Denmark, with Maja Alm also in a podium place, sixth.
