Alison Crocker, a University of Toledo-based astrophysicist continues her strong performance at the World Orienteering Championships. Today she recorded an 18th place finish in the women’s long race. The best finish ever for any American at any foot World Orienteering Championship.

Simone Niggli won World Championships gold medal number 22 in today’s Long distance final, running 13.4 km in 1:20:02 to win by 1 second under 3 minutes. Thierry Gueorgiou, France was a clear winner of the men’s race, his sublime technique and fitness earning him victory by 1 minute 18 seconds over home favourite Jani Lakanen.

08/07/2013 || World Orienteering Championships, Sprint final: 21st gold for Simone Niggli, 1st for Boström ||News||
The Sprint finals with the start and finish in a packed baseball stadium in Sotkamo, Finland this evening were won by Simone Niggli, Switzerland and Mårten Boström from the home country. Niggli’s win was by 8.1 seconds whilst Boström’s was even more convincing, 17.1 seconds.
08/07/2013 || World Orienteering Championships, men’s sprint qualification: defending champion safely through ||News||
Defending sprint world champion Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland qualified easily for this evening’s final, finishing 2 seconds down on the Swedish sprint star Jerker Lysell in his heat. The other heat winners were Rasmus Thrane Hansen, Denmark and Öystein Kvaal Österbö, Norway, who both had clear victories.
