In the last four and a half years Jerker Lysell has had a lot of injuries, and it wasn’t because of this year’s results that he has ended at the top of the list in the first race in Strömstad.

An intense and exciting men’s final ended with a win for home athlete Jerker Lysell, who was 2.8 seconds faster than Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland in the finish. Another well-known Swiss star, Daniel Hubmann, took the bronze medal.

Maja Alm, Denmark stormed round the varied and tricky Final course in Strömstad this afternoon to take the gold medal for the second year in succession, 25.7 seconds quicker than silver medallist Judith Wyder, Switzerland.

This morning’s Sprint Qualification heats on a fine morning in Strömstad, Sweden saw all the strongest runners through to this afternoon’s finals. Most impressive heat winner was Judith Wyder, Switzerland who showed herself back to full form after injury last year with a win by 1.09.

Having gone full circle as it were, the World Trail Orienteering Championships (WTOC) return this year to Sweden, where the very first edition took place.

They have it in cycling. A World Champion jersey. Now it will be a thing in orienteering as well, with IOF introducing World Champion jerseys in FootO, MTBO and SkiO.

Since WOC took place in Finland in 2013, the world championships have visited Italy in 2014 and Scotland in 2015. Now Nokian Tyres World Orienteering Championships are back in Nordic terrain represented by the area around the Swedish cities Strömstad and Tanum.

Medals. The goal is clear for Ida Bobach just before WOC in Strömstad-Tanum starts in a few days. But due to injuries she will not defend her world championship title on Long from Scotland. Instead, all her focus is on Middle and Relay.
