Jerker Lysell – a win in adversity

In the last four and a half years Jerker Lysell has had a lot of injuries, and it wasn’t because of this year’s results that he has ended at the top of the list in the first race in Strömstad.
After the race the Swede was clearly moved. Finally he was the World Champion. Last year he got the silver medal. At the European Championships he has also got two individual medals, but the gold has been missing until the start of WOC in Strömstad. “I did a perfect race. It’s the best race of my life”, he states.
The injuries
For the orienteer from Bollnäs, on the coast a bit north of the middle of Sweden, these results are not the result of a lot of racing, for Jerker can tell about many injuries in recent years. It all started four and half years ago after the start of the World Cup in New Zealand. After that there has been a lot of cycling, running in water and other kinds of training without running.
“At least I have done my condition training”, he says.
No relay
On Sunday he will not be in the Swedish team for the Sprint Relay. “I’m not thinking about that. I am thinking about the gold I have taken”.
– Why isn’t the gold winner in the team, national coach Håkan Carlsson?
“Other runners had good results too. Jerker had got his results after the Sprint Relay team was selected”.
– But he was in the WOC team?
“The reason was his good results from earlier years”.
The good months
Since early May he hasn’t been injured. He could do the running he has wanted to do for some weeks. “I started running in the forest in May. Since the end of June I have done intervals”, he says.
The Swede has since done a lot of good running training. “I’ve got in one more month of running than last year”, he says.

More to achieve
Even though he has been struggling a lot with injuries, he has not been thinking about giving up. “If I had a World Championship gold from previous years it maybe would have been easier to stop, but I have always wanted to do a perfect race at WOC”.
– Now you have done that!
“Yes, but I will not stop”, he smiles. “Earlier in the summer I saw that I can do well in the forest, when I was second overall at O-Ringen. Now I will get results in the forest”.
At WOC this year there can also be one more race for Jerker – the Relay in the end of the week.
