When Lars Jakob Waaler left Trondheim to go to Strömstad, his goal was clear. After thirteen presences in as many WTOC editions, he wanted a medal. But he didn’t expect a gold one. “No I didn’t”, he said with a smile, adding: “Not even when I finished my course today, because I made three mistakes. I said to myself that they would have been too many.” As it turns out, Lars was wrong.

Lars Jakob Waaler is the new TempO World Champion. In a tight fight, he performed at his best in the thin line that joins time and accuracy, winning the medal he wanted most, the one he has been pursuing for thirteen years.

WTOC 2016 started this morning with the TempO qualification heats. Finland was the most effective, with all of its five competitors getting the ticket to the decisive stage. 15 countries will be represented in the Final.

The forests south of Tanumshede play host to the Middle Distance race on Tuesday, in which Sweden’s Tove Alexandersson, World Cup leader and European Champion in this format, will be striving to win her first ever WOC gold. She is the very last starter at 17.10.

Today was the last chance for the WTOC competitors to prepare before the deciding events start tomorrow. At the scenic model event, competitors from 22 different countries had the opportunity to tune in on the Swedish terrain.

The IOF President Brian Porteous went proudly to greet his national team at the end of the race today. Great Britain did better than ever before in a Sprint Relay, but there is still more to aim for.

Cecilie Friberg Klysner had a terrible headache and didn’t feel well after the first race of the Nokian Tyres World Championships. And the next race was to be the biggest challenge so far in her life!

Maja Alm won her second gold medal in two days as she brought her team home to win by 16 seconds over Switzerland, with the bronze medals going to Sweden, 1.01 down on the winners.

The weather is fine in Strömstad this morning, and apart from the possibility of an odd shower the prospects are good for this afternoon’s Sprint Relay which starts at 1650 CET. Another large crowd is expected!
