Excellent prospects for Sprint Relay

Posted on | August 21, 2016 | Category: WOC news

The weather is fine in Strömstad this morning, and apart from the possibility of an odd shower the prospects are good for this afternoon’s Sprint Relay which starts at 1650 CET. Another large crowd is expected!

Last year’s winners Denmark have one enforced change to their team – Emma Klingenberg has retired from international competition and is replaced on first leg by Cecilie Klysner. She is a strong replacement, running well in the European Championships Sprint Relay where the team came second to Russia and winning her heat in yesterday’s Sprint Qualification. Denmark has high hopes of repeating last year’s feat.

Both Switzerland and Sweden, fourth and fifth in Scotland last year, will be looking for a higher position today and both teams look very strong. Switzerland set out with Rahel Friederich, have Florian Howald and Martin Hubmann on the middle legs and have a back-to-form Judith Wyder looking to hold off all comers on the last leg, as she did in the first WOC Sprint Relay in Italy two years ago. Sweden run in the order Lina Strand, Gustav Bergman, Jonas Leandersson and Helena Jansson – masses of speed and experience there.

Norway surprised with a silver medal in Scotland; they start with Silje Ekroll Jahren followed by Eskil Kinneberg, leaving their most experienced team members, Øystein Kvaal Østerbø and Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg, to take the final two legs. Russia, bronze medallists last year, take a similar approach, running in the order Natalie Gemperle, Artem Popov, Andrey Khramov and Galina Vinogradova.

Several other nations will feel they have the potential for a medal placing, and the race will for sure be close and exciting. Will it be another Maja Alm / Judith Wyder / Helena Jansson spectacular on the last leg? We’ll soon know! Watch all the action on IOF LiveCenter.
