Finnish and Russian athletes dominated the top end of the results in this year’s World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships, held in the past week in Ukraine.

Six of the twelve individual events in the 2012 World Cup season have now been staged, and ahead of the rounds in Kazakhstan later this week and in Sweden in late March, Josefine Engström, Sweden and Staffan Tunis, Finland lead the World Cup standings.

Polina Malchikova, Russia won gold again today after similar success earlier in the week in the two relay races, and so did Finland’s Staffan Tunis, already Sprint and relay gold medallist. Russia also took the silver and bronze medals in the women’s race.

In the Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships relays in Sumy, Ukraine, Sweden took the gold medals in both women’s and men’s classes.

In today’s relays, Russia dominated the women’s race with their two best teams finishing first and second. Norway took the silver medals and Sweden the bronze. Finland won the men’s gold medals ahead of Norway (silver), and again it was bronze medals for Sweden.

Four of the seven races that count for the Sprint World Cup have now taken place – two in USA and two in Ukraine. The Sprint World Cup standings are calculated from the results of the individual Sprint races and the Mixed Sprint relays.

Hard middle distance races in quite hilly terrain were won today by Marte Reenaas, Norway, successfully defending her European Champion title, and the 13-fold World Champion veteran Russian Eduard Khrennikov.

22/02/2012 || Engström and Tunis take Sprint golds ||News||

Josefine Engström, Sweden and Staffan Tunis, Finland were today’s clear winners in the European Ski Orienteering Championships Sprint races. Engström had an eight-second lead overall and Tunis won his race by five seconds on this second competition day of the Championships at Sumy, Ukraine.

Russia had three teams in the top six in today’s mixed sprint relay, the first event of the World Cup round 2 and European Ski Orienteering Championships being held around Sumy in eastern Ukraine. In European Championships, Russia took gold, Sweden silver and Bulgaria bronze.
