Relay golds for Finland and Russia

In today’s relays, Russia dominated the women’s race with their two best teams finishing first and second. Norway took the silver medals and Sweden the bronze. Finland won the men’s gold medals ahead of Norway (silver), and again it was bronze medals for Sweden.
The early lead in the women’s race was taken by Czech Republic, then Finland’s second team got in front before the two Russian teams came to the fore on the third leg. Polina Malchikova finished 0:42 ahead of her compatriot Anastasia Kravchenko, with Norway the third team in the finish 1:45 down. Sweden finished next with a fine race from Josefine Engström who brought the team up into a medals position.
In the men’s race, Russia 1 and two Finnish teams came to first change-over more or less together, but on the second leg Staffan Tunis for Finland established a lead of 2:08 over second-placed Norway. Russia’s Andrey Grigoriev dropped back to 7th place on this leg. Olli-Markus Taivainen made no mistake on the third leg, bringing Finland home 1:05 ahead of Norway, with Finland 2 the third team to finish 1:54 down. Erik Rost finished 2 seconds behind to secure the bronze medals for Sweden.
