13/07/2005 || 2005 Junior World Championships: Middle Final – Pre-race Favourite Hertner Sweeps to Victory ||News||
Fabian Hertner, Switzerland stormed round the course in today’s middle distance Final to take victory by 1m 15s over Frenchman Philippe Adamski. Hertner, 7th at long distance in last year’s JWOC, was regarded as the favourite to take the title and he achieved this in fine style. The bronze medal went to the Finnish runner Hannu Airila.

Junior elite runners from 36 nations are converging this weekend on the town of Tenero, in the southernmost part of Switzerland close to the border with Italy, for the 2005 Junior World Championships (JWOC).

Four of the current World Champions in orienteering will be competing for the medals in this year’s World Games, being held in Duisburg, Germany in mid-July.

The original deadline for international participants was April 22, 2005. International participants can now register on-line until May 20, 2005 – which is the deadline for North American participants. This deadline extension applies to on-line registrations only.

At its Annual General Meeting held in Berlin on 17 April, the Association of the IOC Recognised International Sports Federations elected the IOF Secretary General Barbro Ronnberg Secretary General and Member of the ARISF Council. The position is honorary and the term of office is four years.

A busy international programme awaits the world’s elite foot orienteers in 2005. The main highlight will be the first-ever World Championships to be held in Japan, scheduled for August 7-14. This landmark in Japan’s orienteering history will give the world’s elite a championship to remember: a warm welcome and fine Japanese hospitality combined with terrain which will provide a major physical and technical challenge.

Later this year the IOF will appoint the organisers of the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) and the World Masters Orienteering Championships (WMOC) in 2008.
