Foot Orienteering 2005: Japan’s First World Championships

A busy international programme awaits the world’s elite foot orienteers in 2005. The main highlight will be the first-ever World Championships to be held in Japan, scheduled for August 7-14. This landmark in Japan’s orienteering history will give the world’s elite a championship to remember: a warm welcome and fine Japanese hospitality combined with terrain which will provide a major physical and technical challenge.
Training camps in Japan have been well attended, and much has already been said and written about the skills needed to achieve success in terrain with steep slopes, often complex contours, and areas with ‘bamboo bush’ and prickly vegetation. High temperatures and humidity can also be expected in August.
Second time in World Games
Orienteering will for the second time be one of the sports in the World Games when they are held around Duisburg, Germany starting on 14th July. The Games are an important showcase for orienteering, with the best in the world competing for the title of World Games Champion in the individual races for men and women at Bottrop on 16th July. The champion nation will be found the following day in the relay race for mixed national teams.
Three World Cup rounds
There are 3 rounds of the 2005 World Cup, and as in 2004 the results from the World Championships make up round 2. The World Cup starts in southern England on 29th April and concludes near Rome, Italy, with the World Cup Individual Final on 6th October and the Relay Final on 8th October.
World Rankings
The season of World Ranking Events started early in the year with competitions in Spain and Portugal, two venues growing steadily in popularity for both training and competition. Ranking Events are held in all active IOF member countries, enabling elite orienteers from all parts of the world to gain a ranking. Current leaders in the World Rankings are Simone Niggli-Luder, Switzerland and the Russian Valentin Novikov.
Juniors and Veterans
The World Masters Orienteering Championships will be held in Edmonton, Canada from 22-31 July as part of the World Masters Games – again, a good showcase for orienteering, which is one of the best-supported sports in the Games. The 2005 Junior World Championships take place from 11-16 July in Tenero, Switzerland

A web portal will be in operation on the IOF website for the World Games, World Championships and the other World Cup rounds, bringing reports, interviews, leading results and pictures from every day of competition. Reports and results will also be posted from the Junior and World Masters Championships. And on the website the World Rankings are quickly updated after every ranking event, so that an up-to-date ranking list is always available.
