World SkiO Championships: Sprint Relay win for Russia

Russia enjoyed a convincing victory in the first medal race in this year’s championships being held at Hamar and Løten, Norway. Finland finished in second place, 45 seconds down on the winners, and Sweden took the bronze medals.
Ski orienteering’s version of Sprint Relay has teams of two running six legs in all in the order W-M-W-M-W-M. Olga Novikova, Kazakhstan led the field into the first changeover, but from then on it was Russia in the lead all the way with Andrey Lamov making the decisive break-through on the second leg. Finland held second place throughout the race; Sweden had a slow start with Josefine Engström coming in eighth after the first leg, but Erik Rost brought them up to fourth on the following leg and they gained a further place on the fourth leg. Mikhail Sorokin proved a good partner for Olga Novikova and Kazakhstan finished a creditable fourth overall.
The championships continue tomorrow with the individual Sprint between 12.00 and 14.30 CET.
