World Ski Orienteering Championships: Sweden double in Sprint

Both gold medals went to Sweden in the first race of the Championships, the Sprint, at Ridder in Kazakhstan today. Tove Alexandersson and Peter Arnesson won by 6.4 and 14.5 seconds respectively.
Tove Alexandersson, defending Sprint champion and currently heading the IOF World Rankings, proved conclusively that she had her ski legs back in full form after her successes in the foot orienteering World Cup in New Zealand in January. It was a convincing victory over the very experienced Finnish athlete Mervi Pesu, who this year has returned to top-level skiO after a break. The bronze medal went to the recently-crowned European Champion in Sprint, Tatiana Kozlova from Russia. The Russian team showed strength in depth, taking three of the six podium placings.
The outcome of Peter Arnesson’s last international race, the European Championships (ESOC) Long race, was also a gold medal, and he was silver medallist in the ESOC Sprint. His win today was even more convincing than Tove Alexandersson’s; almost a quarter of a minute is a long time in Sprint. Russians took silver and bronze medal positions, Andrei Lamov finishing in a time 11.3 seconds quicker than that of Kiril Veselov. ESOC Sprint gold medallist Stanimir Belomazhev, Bulgaria was 6th today.
The Championships continue tomorrow with the Middle distance races.
