World Ski Orienteering Championships: second gold for Arnesson

The Swedish athlete Peter Arnesson is clearly in his best form ever! In his 13th season of top-level ski orienteering, he today took the Middle distance title, after winning the Sprint yesterday and the European Championships Long distance last month. And again, this new victory was by an extremely impressive margin – just over 2 minutes. New women’s Middle distance champion is Russia’s Anastasia Kravchenko.
The men’s results were eye-catching for two reasons. Firstly, the three medals went to the same three athletes as in the Sprint, and in the same order. And secondly, it was a very good day for Norway, who packed four runners in the first seven, albeit none gaining a medal.
Silver medallist Andrei Lamov, Russia was 2.01 down on Peter Arnesson at the finish at the end of a long and hard race held in heavy rain and high winds – the temperature was plus 5 degrees, and the wind was strong enough to bring trees down over the trails in places. Fourteen seconds slower was Lamov’s compatriot Kiril Veselov. Then came the Norwegians, fastest of whom was Ove Sætra, just 8 seconds away from a bronze medal.
In the women’s race Anastasia Kravchenko, silver medallist at this distance in the European Championships last month, won gold ahead of Tatiana Kozlova, bronze medallist in yesterday’s Sprint. The gap here was 1.20, and a further 28 seconds slower was Josefine Engström, Sweden in bronze medal position. Russia took four of the first six placings; yesterday’s winner Tove Alexandersson was sixth today.
The Mixed Sprint Relay, for teams of two including at least one woman, takes place tomorrow.
