The athletes Thierry Gueorgiou, Anders Nordberg and Michal Smola stopped on the last leg in the World Championships relay to help their fellow competitor who had got injured. The president of the IOF, Åke Jacobson, expressed a special thanks to the three athletes at the prize giving ceremony.
“Orienteering prides itself on the idea of fair play. Today we have seen the ultimate expression of this ideal – one of the fundamental values of our sport. Three athletes, Michal Smola, Czech Republic, Thierry Gueorgiou, France and Anders Nordberg, Norway, sacrificed their own and their nation’s medal possibilities by stopping to assist an injured fellow competitor.
We must acknowledge this supreme example of sportsmanship that characterises orienteering and our athletes.
As president of the IOF, I express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude. Michal, Thierry and Anders – you are an inspiration to all”, Jacobson stated after the relay.
