World Orienteering Championships: Relay golds for Switzerland and Sweden
Posted on | July 12, 2014 | Category: News

Switzerland won the women’s relay and Sweden the men’s, but in both races the lead changed several times as the runners made errors in the testing Italian terrain.
In the women’s race it was Judith Wyder, taking her third gold medal of the Championships, who brought Switzerland in first after a near faultless run. The silver medals went to Denmark, who at one stage on the second leg had a lead of over 1½ minutes, and Sweden finished third to take the bronze.
Sweden, Switzerland and France took the men’s medals, with Gustav Bergman gaining impressively on the other two in the first part of the final leg. Bergman gradually pulled away, whilst the fight between the other two lasted right to the end, the final margin between them being 5 seconds. There were exciting sprint finishes for fourth and fifth places (Norway and Finland) and for seventh and eighth (Great Britain and Austria).
There was persistent rain and some thunder during the races, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of a good crowd in the beautiful scenery of Campomulo.
