World Orienteering Championships, Middle qualification: 22 nations in women’s final

Twenty-two nations will be represented in the women’s final tomorrow afternoon, including Japan with a runner in a final for the first time this year. Finland has four athletes in the final by virtue of having the current World Champion, Minna Kauppi. Six nations – Australia, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland – have three athletes in the final.
Heat winners today were Merja Rantanen, Finland, Tove Alexandersson, Sweden and Inga Dambe, Latvia. The winners of heats 1 and 2 took the same time whilst in heat 3 the winning time was 1½ minutes slower. The heat winners will be the last starters in the 45-strong field in the final.
The race took place just 4 km from the Event Centre in Vuokatti in Finland on a warm and sunny morning.
