World Orienteering Championships 2008 – the biggest TV coverage of orienteering ever!

The detailed plans for televising the 2008 World Orienteering Championships in Olomouc in the Czech Republic are now taking shape, and were made official on the event’s website on 9th March. All four finals of the Championships will be televised, with live productions from the sprint, middle distance and relay races, and material for an edited broadcast from the long final.
The signal will be distributed internationally by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The host broadcaster and producer will be Czech national TV, using the same experienced team that recently produced the Biathlon World Cup coverage in Liberec.
“This means that world-class orienteering can reach the homes of many millions of viewers via the EBU distribution, which is most certainly a record in TV coverage” says IOF Sports Director Björn Persson. “The IOF is delighted with the efforts of the WOC 2008 organising committee and the Czech national TV to fulfil the IOF vision of a raised profile for orienteering”, he continues. “It is now an important task for all national orienteering federations to inform and work with their local TV contacts so as to get orienteering on the programme schedules in the second week of July in as many nations as possible. The IOF will be actively supporting these efforts”, Björn Persson concludes.
