World MTBO Championships: sprint golds to France and Russia

The final gold medals of the Championships were won today in the sprint races by Gaëlle Barlet, France and Anton Foliforov, Russia. Barlet, fourth in the World Championships sprint last year, won by 2 seconds whilst Foliforov, long distance champion last year, had a 31-second winning margin.
The times were very close in the women’s race over 7.5 km with 115 metres climb at Sassano,Italy. Only 16 seconds separated first and sixth places. The silver medal went to Marika Hara, Finland and the bronze to Michaela Gigon, middle distance winner two days ago.
In the men’s race Jiri Hradil, Czech Republic tool silver 15 seconds before Denmark’s Erik Skovgaard Knudsen on the 9.0 km course with145 metres climb. Both the Czech Republic and Russia had two placings in the top six.
Svetlana Poverina, Russia completed a clean sweep of the junior women’s individual medals with victory in the sprint by 24 seconds. She didn’t take part last year, but won gold at sprint and middle distances in 2009 and also won the long distance gold back in 2008. Quite an athlete – someone to watch out for in senior ranks next year. Krystof Bogar, Czech Republic won his second individual gold of the Championships today, following up his middle distance win with victory in the junior men’s sprint by 21 seconds.
