Finland with seven and Sweden with six gained the biggest gold medal hauls in the twenty-three competitive classes in today’s Long Distance Final in Estonia. Gold medals went to eleven nations in all.
On a rainy morning, a number of the gold medalists won their classes by quite large margins; both W35 and M35 were won by more than 4 minutes, and the biggest margin was that of Birgitta Olsson, Sweden who was the fastest by 6.17 in W75. Closest race was in M65 where Tapio Peippo, Finland beat the Swiss athlete Pekka Marti by just 15 seconds.
Nine competitors (shown by a * in the results list below) won both the Sprint and the Long in this year’s Championships. In W95 the oldest competitor in the Championships, Astrid Andersson from Sweden, completed her course in a very good time. Four competitors (shown with #) were also class winners in last year’s Long Final.
Next year’s World Masters is in New Zealand in late April, and will be held as part of The World Games.
