Posted on | July 19, 2004 | Category: News
Sweden’s Jørgen Mårtensson, World Champion at classic distance in 1991 and 1995, won gold again in his new class M45 in this year’s World Masters Orienteering Championships held recently in Italy. He previously won as an M40 in New Zealand in 2000.
W35 winner was Brigitte Wolf, Switzerland, currently 12th in the world rankings but now retired from top elite international competition. The silver medal here went to her compatriot Sabrina Meister-Fesseler. Bronze was won by Anna Gornicka-Antonowicz, Poland, who immediately afterwards flew to Denmark to take part in the European Championships, where next day she qualified for the long distance final.
Swedish colours dominated the podium at the WMOC prize-giving ceremony, 12 of the 22 gold medals being won by Swedish runners. The oldest competitor, Erkki Luntamo from Finland, successfully retained his M90 title in good style.
