World elite orienteers make up new Athletes’ Commissions

At its recent meeting, the IOF Council was pleased to receive confirmation that an Athletes’ Commission consisting of world elite athletes had been formed in two orienteering disciplines – Foot Orienteering and Ski Orienteering.
Emil Wingstedt (SWE) is the co-ordinator of the Athletes’ Commission in Foot Orienteering and the three other members are Joanne Allison (AUS), Thierry Gueorgiou (FRA) and Simone Niggli (SUI).
The Athletes’ Commission in Ski Orienteering consists of Eivind Tonna (NOR, co-ordinator), Yvonne Gantenbein (SUI), Johan Granath (SWE), Erja Jokinen (FIN), Eduard Khrennikov (RUS) and Ondrej Vodrazka (CZE).
President Åke Jacobson comments: “The formation of Athletes Commissions is in keeping with the recommendation of the IOC 2000 Reform Commission that “athletes should be well represented at all levels of the sports movement” and I am very pleased that these world class orienteers are willing to take an active role in the development of world elite orienteering.”
Like the other IOF Commissions, the Athletes’ Commissions areresponsible to the IOF Council. The role of the Athletes’ Commissions is advisory and they will liaise with and provide advice to the IOF Council and the discipline commissions on rules, event programmes, fairness and other matters relevant to the elite athlete and world elite orienteering.
An Athletes Commission in Mountain Bike Orienteering is expected to be established by the end of May 2007.
