World Cup standings: Alexandersson supreme and joint Swiss lead

Three wins for Tove Alexandersson give her a lead of 115 points over second-placed Sara Lüscher, whilst the Swiss pair Matthias Kyburz and Daniel Hubmann share an 85-point lead over Olav Lundanes, after the first round in Tasmania.
The very best athletes taking part in the World Cup races in Tasmania demonstrated that they are equally capable of coping with the very differing technical and physical challenges in all three formats – Sprint, Middle and Long. Tove Alexandersson, Sweden, World Cup overall winner last year, showed her class with decisive victories in all three races, and her nearest rival at the end of the round is Sara Lüscher, Switzerland who was third in the Sprint and second over Long Distance. In third place is another Swiss, Judith Wyder.
It will be fascinating now to follow Tove Alexandersson’s progress in her other sporting success area, ski orienteering. The European Ski Orienteering Championships begin in Lenzerheide, Switzerland in just over a week’s time; Tove has shown in the past that she can switch from the one to the other discipline without too much effect on her form. We’ll see what happens this time!
Matthias Kyburz won the Sprint and the Long and was third in the Middle; Daniel Hubmann won the Middle and was second in both of the other two races. These results give these two Swiss stars 260 points each, ahead of Olav Lundanes, Norway who was second and fourth in the two forest races, and Gustav Bergman, Sweden who was third in both the Sprint and the Long. Both Hubmann and Kyburz have achieved overall World Cup victory in the past.
There is now a big gap in time before the next World Cup round, in Norway and Sweden in early June.
