World Cup, Spain: Middle distance wins for Eliasson and Kratov

Posted on | April 6, 2014 | Category: News

Lena Eliasson, Sweden and Oleksandr Kratov, Ukraine were the winners of the third World Cup race of the season held in Murcia, Spain.

Courses were again both physically and technically challenging, and especially on the men’s course the winning time was longer than the 35 minutes estimated by the course planner.

In the women’s race Lena Eliasson, second in the Long distance race yesterday, was the fastest throughout and finished with a 28-second advantage over Russia’s Anastasiya Tikhonova, who before today was placed 29th in the IOF World Rankings and will therefore be particularly pleased with her result. Third was Helena Jansson, Sweden, making a welcome return to form after being continually hampered by injury last year. World Cup leader Tove Alexandersson lost 5 minutes through errors in the first half of the course and could only finish 17th today with a time of 40.11. However Sweden demonstrated its strength in depth in women’s orienteering with four placings in the top six.

Oleksandr Kratov is IOF World Ranked 16th and this is his first win at World Cup level. He was second to Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland after 5.1 km but pulled through well in the second half of the course to finish with a win by 13 seconds. The young Estonian Timo Sild, 44th in the World Rankings, took a very creditable third place.

The World Cup resumes in a week’s time in Portugal, where three European Championships races (Sprint, Middle and Long distance) count for World Cup points.
