World Cup races in Spain this weekend

Spain is in the spotlight this weekend when two World Cup races will be held near Cehegín in the Murcia region of the country. Athletes from 23 nations will compete in a Long and a Middle Distance race.
On Saturday the Long distance race has individual start, with the start order the reverse of the athletes´ IOF World Ranking position as on 30th March. The men have a course of 16.0 km with 715 m climb and an estimated winning time of 96 minutes, the women 10.9 km and 445 m of climbing, expected to be won with a time of around 76 minutes. The Sunday race is over Middle distance with individual start from three start groups.
The same arena will be used on both days, but the terrain to be used is subtly different. Overall it is pine forest with a great deal of erosion detail, some of it very complex and with not many line features, so relocation could prove very difficult for competitors who lose map contact. Slopes are said to be mainly moderate, and undergrowth should not prove a significant hindrance to running. The weather forecast for the area is good, with Sunday the warmer of the two days.
There will be live TV coverage on the internet – and for spectators in the arena – throughout both races, showing pictures from many points out on the courses as well as live GPS tracking. The competition website is www.wcupspain2014.es.
Leading results and reports will be posted on this website after each race.
