World Cup Final weekend in Switzerland

The final of the unofficial Sprint Relay World Cup on Friday will act as a curtain raiser for the two last 2014 World Cup races, to be staged at Liestal, SE of Basel in Switzerland: a Middle Distance race on Saturday and the traditional final Sprint on Sunday.

The Sprint Relay is for teams of 2 women and 2 men running in the order WMMW on courses of around 2.5 km.; a winning time of about 1 hour is planned. Denmark is the current leader in the national standings with a 30-point lead over Sweden and 50 points ahead of Switzerland. Points awarded in each race are 1st – 100, 2nd – 80, 3rd – 60 and 4th – 45; this means that if Sweden wins the race, Denmark must finish second to be the overall winners, and if Switzerland wins then Denmark must finish second or third to win overall.

In the World Cup individual standings, Tove Alexandersson, Sweden and Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland have unassailable leads at the top and Judith Wyder, Switzerland seems assured of second place in the women’s standings, but the fight for the other podium places will be keen; see the latest positions and points scores below.

The Middle race on Saturday is at Galms, with the bulk of the terrain just outside the city and the very final section in an urban area. Moderate to steep slopes and rich vegetation are promised. The race takes place between 12.00 and 15.00 local time.

Sunday’s Sprint is in the centre of Liestal and includes the old town. This race is being shown live on Swiss TV and takes place between 13.30 and 15.30.
