The World Orienteering Championships, this year being held in Italy, start tomorrow (Saturday) with the Sprint Qualification at Burano and the Final in the city of Venice, with the finish arena for the Final on the Venice waterfront. The Opening Ceremony will be held on Sunday and the Mixed Sprint Relay on Monday.
Burano and Mazzorbo islands are the venue for the qualification heats, three for women and three for men. The best 15 from each heat qualify for the Final. The women’s race starts at 9.00 and the men’s at 10.00 local time. The area is partly urban with very narrow streets and a canal with bridges, and elsewhere is less built and more green with some farmland.
The Sprint Final is in a part of Venice city, where the first start for women will be at 15.20 and for men at 16.25; the start interval is one minute. The estimated winning time is 15 minutes, with the women’s course covering 4.05 km and the men’s 4.40 km. Up until 2012, after which the area became embargoed, Venice has been the venue for an annual sprint race in the autumn which has attracted competitors from many countries.
Asiago is the venue for the World Championships and World TrailO Championships Opening Ceremony on Sunday at 18.00. Then on Monday, starting at 17.30, the new Mixed Sprint Relay will be held in the historical centre of Trento with its street layout dating from Roman times and many ancient buildings. The competition is for national teams of 2 women and 2 men running in the order W-M-M-W with the fastest time on each leg planned to be about 15 minutes. Two trial races have been held earlier this year, won by Sweden and Denmark.
