Women’s long distance final: again a gold medal for Sweden
Posted on | August 17, 2011 | Category: News

Annika Billstam, Sweden, led throughout the race in today’s final up in Le Grand Revard, a detailed limestone upland with mixed open countryside and forest near Chambery, and won by the big margin of 4 minutes 28 seconds on the 10.3 km course with 450 metres climb over Dana Brozkova, Czech Republic.
In very hot conditions and very difficult terrain both technically and physically, Annika’s time was impressive. A good majority of the women runners took more than 2 hours on the course. The bronze medallist was Helena Jansson, Sweden, silver medallist in yesterday’s sprint.
A very big crowd is basking in the sun enjoying the competition, with continuous action on the big screen and the finish and a spectator passage through the middle of the arena, which is a large amphitheatre in an upland alp; it will also be used for the middle distance final on Friday and the relay on Saturday.
