Wojciech Kowalski: “We’re ready for more”

Wojciech Kowalski had big expectations at the start, and the team got a good finish – sixth in the Sprint Relay. The Polish team are eager for much more on home ground.
Individually the Poles didn’t really show what they can do. “I didn’t do so well in the first two races. I wasn’t in my best shape, but the relay gave a happy ending”, smiles Kowalski.
The 34-year-old athlete and three others on the Polish first team ended sixth in the last race of the first round of this year’s World Cup. So it ended with smiles in the centre of Trzebnica. “All four of us had good races”.
Individually he had the best Polish result on the Middle Distance with his 30th place. In the Sprint, Rafal Podzinzki was 26th and Hanna Wisniewska 35th.
Team has big goals
The Polish team had a good mixture of experienced and not so experienced. Anchor Aleksandra Hornik is still a junior, but working hard with the seniors and is ready to fight for bigger things than a place in the team to JWOC in Switzerland. “I will also start in the selection races for WOC for seniors”, she says. Individually she got a good and promising 36th place among the 90 women on the Middle Distance.
Third leg runner Pawlak Bartosz had wanted, like Kowalski, to do a bit better on home ground as an individual. “It was more difficult than expected”, he says.
For the runners from Poland, the World Cup races at home were a big motivator for both the rest of the season and of course what is coming up next year in the last part of July: The World Games.
Now the Polish athletes know what to expect – on home ground – in Wroclaw and Trzebnica!
A lot of nice words
It has been 18 years since the previous World Cup races in Poland. The athletes and team leaders were very positive about what they’ve experienced in the last few days. “It was a thrilling relay on the final day, just as the Sprint Relay should be. The organisers did excellent work every day”, Håkan Carlsson, the Swedish head coach tells.
