Winnie Oakhill: “It’s a nice challenge”

Australian athlete Winnie Oakhill is getting new experiences in what to look for and what to have under her feet at the Championships in Norway, and is showing strength.
“It’s difficult. I have never been overseas before this trip to JWOC and the terrain is totally different from home”, she says.
“What’s under the feet is a really big difference. At home there is hard ground. Here there are a lot of marshes, we don’t have them at all at home, and soft ground. Nice to try it!”
The first-year junior is from Brisbane. In the Sprint she was 58th, well-placed in the best half of the results. 135 women took part. In the Middle Distance Qualification she ended as number 18 in her heat, and so the A-final is next. She made one big mistake and felt it didn’t go so fast, and it was a really challenging course and especially for those not familiar with Norwegian terrain, but Winnie coped very well.
