Also among the men it was a win for the Czech Team in the relay at JWOC on home ground. Adam Choupek ran especially well.
Adam started as number seven on the second leg. When he finished the gap was 2.10 minutes to Sweden in second place and he was by far the fastest on the relay. “It was just me and the map. I often do better in a relay and the terrain suits me well. I had my best race of JWOC”, says Adam.
“I knew there was a gap of about two minutes to Sweden, and I felt pretty sure I would manage to stay in front if I had a good race, says Michal Hubacek. The anchor-man ran very well for most of the last leg, but just before the finish he started to look around. “I had got nerves and lost one and a half minutes. After that I looked around, but I couldn’t see anybody”.
– And got the gold?
“Awesome!” he smiles.
Two golds on one day is really great, and the host nation achieved it on a national holiday – with full TV coverage.
In the men’s class there were three legs 5,8 – 6,0 kilometres long with 22 controls on each leg. 65 teams took part.
With the relay over, the Championships in Hradec Králové, about 100 kilometres east of Prague, have now ended. It has been an excellent event with challenging races in different and nice terrain.
Next year Bulgaria will be hosting JWOC for the second time. They were also taking care of it in 1999. In 2015 JWOC will be in Norway for the first time.
