Volunteering at EOC – setting out controls

Asaf likes wearing a South African O-shirt that he received in a shirt swap when he attended the JWOC. One day, he would like to go there and experience South African Orienteering.
For Asaf Avner, it was a goal to take part in European Championship in orienteering. The athlete from Israel was also doing just that, but not in the way he was thinking some months ago.
Last season, Asaf Avner from Yuvalim in Galilea was number three overall in the Israel league. Earlier, he has taken part in both the European Youth Championships and the Junior World Championships (JWOC). A future goal is to take part in WOC, but not this year, since Israel just has one place at the WOC in Strömstad.
– Hopefully I will take part in Estonia next year, Avner says.
Early mornings
Since April he has been living in Olomouc, where the WOC took place in 2008. Now he is in Jesenik. It is not in the way it was planned, but it ends up as a great week with a lot of new experience.
– I am in the group of people who are placing out the controls in the terrain. I’ve got a lot of experience. When I’m not taking part, it’s great to have this job.
He thinks he’s the first from Israel that take part in this kind of work at EOC or WOC.
At five O’clock in the morning he wakes up. It is time to go to the arenas and place the controls out in the forest. In the evening the controls have to be taken in from the forest again.
Military for three years
In February, he ended his three years in the military. He liked to be there and had opportunities to train, but it wasn’t easy to go abroad.
–Now I am abroad for first time in three years’ time, he says.
Since April, he has been living in the Czech Republic and working for Hana Orienteering.
– I’ve met Briko – Robert Zdráhal – when he has organised trips in Israel, he says.
The route for the future
Until July he will be in Czech Republic. The route choice after that is not decided yet.
– The coming year, I want to travel and get more orienteering experience. I like the sport so much. It’s a love for life, he says.
– Why did you start with orienteering
– It’s because of my Dad. He got involved in the sport in the army.
Asaf will now get more experience and raise the level.
– At coming championships I will take a step further, from setting out controls to taking part, he smiles.
He also wants to help others to become better. In a short while he will be in charge of a training camp for 50 athletes from his own country. For one week they will train in the Czech Republic.
Working as a control setter at EOC is a great experience.
