Unofficial European Cup in Trail Orienteering opened in Finland

Round 1 of the Unofficial European Cup in Trail Orienteering (ECTO) 2014 was held last weekend in Tuusula and Nurmijärvi in Finland, in conjunction with FinTrailO, a weekend with two PreO and one TempO competition. The TempO competition on Saturday and the PreO competition on Sunday were ECTO 2014 events 1 and 2.
In the TempO race, ECTO 1, there was a clear Finnish dominance, the home country taking all three places on the podium. Winner was Pinja Mäkinen, reigning World Champion in this discipline, with the time of 132 seconds. At the seven stations and totally 28 controls, she had answered all correct – an impressive result. Second and third were Lauri Kontkanen and Antti Rusanen.
At the PreO on Sunday, ECTO 2, altogether 13 competitors had all 21 controls correct on the course. At the two timed controls there was a very tight fight on the seconds. Winner was Martin Jullum, Norway, with 5 seconds before Marit Wiksell, Sweden, 7 sec. and Martin Fredholm, Sweden, and Geir Myhr Øien, Norway, both 8 seconds.
In the overall FinTrailO competition Marit Wiksell was the winner with 67 points and 106 seconds with Martin Jullum 66/31 and Martin Fredholm 66/71 in second and third places.
