UK orienteering pioneer John Disley has passed away

John Disley introduced orienteering to Britain, chaired the UK orienteering body and was a member of the IOF Council from 1973 to 1984. He directed the first World Orienteering Championships in Britain, at Aviemore in 1976, together with his close friend Chris Brasher.
He competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Helsinki in the 3000 metres steeplechase where he won the bronze medal.
Together with Brasher he also founded London marathon, the first held in 1981, after running the New York Marathon in 1979 and being very impressed by its success.
For eight years he was vice-chairman of the UK Sports Council and he is a member of the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and two daughters.
