Three championships kicked off today

Helene Söderlund, Sweden and Staffan Tunis, Finland won the first gold medals in the European Ski Orienteering Championships (ESOC) which started today in Ringsaker and Lillehammer in Norway. Today’s race was long distance with interval start, 20.9 km with 650 m climb for men and 14.7 km with 570 m climb for women. Helene’s victory was by 1:43 over the very experienced Russian Tatiana Vlasova, with her compatriot Tatyana Kozlova taking the bronze medal. Olli-Markus Taivainen took the silver medal in the men’s race, 1:09 behind Staffan Tunis, and the Russian Andrey Gruzdev took the bronze. Six nations are represented in the podium places in the men’s and women’s classes.
The Junior World Championships long distance also took place today; the gold medallists are Barbro Kvåle, Norway, who won two individual golds in last year’s Junior World Championships, and Daniel Svensson, Sweden.
Competitors of all ages have arrived in Ringsaker to compete in ESOC, the Junior and Masters World Championships and the European Youth Championships. 21 nations in all are represented, with 101 competitors in the senior elite classes, 92 in Junior World Championships, 59 M/W 17’s and almost 300 taking part in the World Masters.
The race programme continues on Friday with the ESOC and Junior World Championships sprints, on Saturday with mass start middle distance races and on Sunday with the relays. The two World Masters races are on Saturday and Sunday.
In the European Championships the leading (red group) men and women competitors will carry GPS tracking equipment, so there will be plenty to see when following the competitions live, either as a spectator in the arenas or on the internet.
