Swiss and Swedish dominance in first World Cup round

The Swiss men and Swedish women were at the forefront in yesterday’s qualification races in the first World Cup event of the new season in Turkey, and their dominance was emphasised again today. In the top six, four of the men were Swiss and three of the women were Swedish. The winners were Daniel Hubmann and Tove Alexandersson.
The men’s race was held first today on a small but very varied area with some hilly stretches with crags and boulders and areas with dense forest, followed by a more park-like section after the spectator control. Winner by 34 seconds was the very experienced Swiss star Daniel Hubmann, with last year’s World Cup winner and World Games Sprint and Middle distance champion Matthias Kyburz in second place. Third was Gustav Bergman, Sweden. Hubmann brothers David and Martin and Kyburz brothers Matthias and Andreas were all in the top six.
In the women’s race Sweden’s Tove Alexandersson, taking a short break from elite ski orienteering before heading off to Russia for the European SkiO Championships, took a strong lead of 1.44 ahead of Judith Wyder from a start half-way down the start list. She had to wait some time to see if her time would be overtaken by Helena Jansson, clearly well recovered from her injury-hit 2013 season. In an exciting finish to the race, Helena failed by just 8 seconds to match Tove’s time; none of the other late starters could manage a top-six result apart from last starter Lena Eliasson who was sixth.
Tomorrow there is a Mixed Sprint Relay, the first round of the unofficial Sprint World Cup.
