SkiO World Cup, Germany: double Swedish victory in Sprint

Wins for Tove Alexandersson and Erik Rost in today’s Sprint, the first race of the second round of the World Cup in Germany, gave the best possible start for the Swedish team.

Tove Alexandersson, winner of two of the individual races in the first round, was fastest throughout today’s race and had a winning margin of 18 seconds at the finish. Mariya Kechkina, Russia was second and another Russian, Alena Trapeznikova, third a further 15 seconds down. Russia’s Tatyana Oborina, winner of the Sprint race in the first round in Finland, was 11th today.

In the men’s race, Erik Rost was third fastest, 6 seconds down, at the first time-check but had a clean race after that, pulling up to win by 13 seconds from Bulgarian Stanimir Belomazhev who had the best time on the first section. Ville-Petteri Saarela of Finland had a very good race to finish third, 21 seconds down on Rost’s time.

The Event Centre for this World Cup round is Oberwiesenthal in the Ore Mountains, south-west of Dresden and very close to the border with the Czech Republic. The competition area lies between 900 and 1200 metres above sea level and is much used for cross-country skiing and biathlon events. Tomorrow’s race, individual Middle Distance with course lengths 6.1 km (women) and 7.6 km (men), takes place between 9.30 and 12.00 local time.

The World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships are taking place at the German venue in conjunction with the World Cup races, with 263 competitors from 18 different nations taking part. The two oldest competitors are in the M85 class, and the largest class is M50 with 31 competitors.
