Ski Orienteering World Cup: Sprint double for Sweden

Tove Alexandersson took her second Ski Orienteering World Cup victory yesterday, when the sprint race was held at the Auburn Ski Club in Truckee, California. She was accompanied by her team mate, Peter Arnesson, who grabbed the first place in the men’s sprint race by keeping two Norwegians, Lars Hol Moholdt and Hans Jörgen Kvåle, behind him.
The race course was physically tough, and the race was held at 2200 meters altitude in a strong wind and snow fall. Women’s course was 3.6 km long and had 9 controls and 90 meters climbing. Alexandersson was in the end in a class of her own, as she beat the second placed Aunhild Bakken Rognstad from Norway with 26 seconds.
“I felt very good and I am satisfied with my race. I did not think that the orienteering today was particularly difficult, but the course was tough with a lot of climbing”, said the Swede in the finish.
Kajsa Richardsson from Sweden also had a good race and took the third podium place before Switzerland’s Carmen Strub, who had her best World Cup result ever when finishing fourth.

The men’s 4.6 km sprint race was also very physical and demanding, so Peter Arnesson did not get his victory without struggle and pain. “I was completely full of lactic acid already at the first control, and the rest of the race was just about fighting against the hills and the pain. It was not a perfect run, but it was good enough for a victory this time”, said the seemingly happy and smiling Swede, who was only 4 seconds faster than the Norwegian duo – Lars Hol Moholdt and Hans Jörgen Kvåle – sharing the second place. Finland’s Staffan Tunis made a good race again, but had to settle with another fourth place, before Ove Saetra completing the strong Norwegian team results in sprint.

The World Cup continues on Thursday with a Middle Distance race at Tahoe City. Tove Alexandersson has a clear lead in the overall World Cup standings with her two victories, where as Hans Jörge Kvåle is the new leader in the Men’s overall World Cup.
