Ski Orienteering World Cup: Huge success for Norway’s Reenaas

The rapidly improving Norwegian skier Marte Reenaas was the outstanding winner of the women’s Long distance mass start race at Uzana, Bulgaria today, finishing 44 seconds ahead of the highly experienced Finn Liisa Anttila. Andrey Grigoriev, Russia won convincingly in the men’s race.
Reenaas, second in the Sprint yesterday, out-skied all the opposition on the long, physically demanding course. Second-placed Anttila came into the finish entirely alone; third placed Natalya Tomilova, Russia, current leader of the World Cup standings, finished third 32 seconds later. There was then a gap of almost 2 minutes to the fourth finisher, Olga Novikova, Kazakhstan, and another gap of almost 3½ minutes to fifth and sixth placings.
The result of the men’s race was also clear-cut with Grigoriev finishing 38 seconds ahead of the Finn Staffan Tunis, who was in the lead for a good part of the race. Third place went to the Swede Peter Arnesson who was a further 58 seconds down. Yesterday’s winner in the Sprint, Eduard Khrennikov, finished fourth and leads current standings.
The third race in this second round of the World Cup, at Middle distance, is on Friday.
