Ski Orienteering World Cup: First place tie in Middle race

The last but one race in this year’s Ski Orienteering World Cup, over Middle distance, was distinguished by a tie for first place in the men’s class, Sweden’s Peter Arnesson and Erik Rost both registering 38:16. A good day for Sweden saw Josefine Engström winning the women’s race by 19 seconds.
The junior star Tove Alexandersson had to be content with third place today, a full 2 minutes behind Engström, after making several mistakes on the course. In the men’s class it was Norway’s Lars Hol Moholdt who took third position, 1 minute and 2 seconds slower than the joint winners.
The last race in the series, an ultra-long distance race with mass start, takes place tomorrow and promises to be very exciting as scores at the top of the World Cup standings are very close. This race counts double points for the standings, where a competitors best 10 scores from the 12 races count. The winner tomorrow is awarded 120 points, second place 100, third 90 and fourth 80.
In the women’s class Josefine Engström currently leads Tove Alexandersson by 63 points, and can be expected to drop a 25-point race from earlier in the season for her overall score, but Alexandersson has completed only 8 races up to now. To win overall, Alexandersson has to win tomorrow with Engström finishing 4th or below, or finish second with Engström 5th or below. The other contender for the title is Russia’s Polina Malchikova who has 20 points fewer than Alexandersson.
The men’s class is very open with five athletes within a 49-point points range having a chance of finishing at the top of the standings. Staffan Tunis, Finland has 10 points more than Erik Rost, Sweden, with Rost’s compatriot Peter Arnesson on 5 points fewer again. Andrey Grigoriev, Russia and Hans Jørgen Kvåle, Norway are the others with a chance of winning overall.
