Ski orienteering in the first CISM Winter World Games

CISM Winter Military World Games, to be organised 20-25 March 2010 in Italy, will bring together more than 600 military representing four continents. Ski orienteering is one of the eight disciplines at the Games. According to Juraj Nemec, Acting Chairman of the IOF Ski Orienteering Commission, this is an important step for ski orienteering: “I am very pleased to see ski orienteering in the first edition of the CISM Winter World Games. This is a significant milestone on our journey towards the inclusion in the Olympic Winter Games.”
The seven other disciplines in Aosta Valley, Italy, are biathlon, patrol race, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, short track speed skating, ski orienteering, indoor sport climbing, and ski mountaineering (as demonstration sport).
Friendship through Sport
Founded in 1948, the International Military Sports Council (CISM) is one of the largest multidisciplinary organisations in the world. The ultimate goal of CISM is to contribute to world peace by uniting armed forces through sports; and the motto under which CISM operates is “Friendship through Sport”. The Winter Military World Games are organised for the first time in 2010. The President of CISM, Major General Gianni Gola, declared: “This is another historical moment for CISM, which is going to give our athletes of winter sports their Games”.
