Ski-O Stars Gear Up for World Championships
Posted on | February 23, 2005 | Category: News
With the start of the 2005 World Championships (WOC) in Ski Orienteering less than 2 weeks away, the world?s leading ski orienteering stars are now into the last phases of training and preparation. Most of them took part in the ?pre-WOC? in December, a series of high-quality events in the same region of Finland as the WOC itself, so they know the type of terrain they will meet ? but nothing, naturally, about the World Championship courses which have been set for them apart from the course lengths and height differences.
Winners of the ?pre-WOC? men?s races over middle and long distances were Eduard Khrennikov (Russia) and Bertil Nordqvist (Sweden), whilst Erja Jokinen (Finland) won both of the women?s races. All three athletes have continued to show good form in World Ranking events during January and February. Nordqvist has won races at sprint, middle and long distance in Sweden recently, but it is Khrennikov who currently heads the men?s World Rankings with Nordqvist in second place. The Russian Ruslan Gritsan is third-placed. Jokinen is leading the women?s rankings after two more victories in recent World Ranking events, with Tatiana Vlasova (Russia) close behind in second place following successes in Russian cup events, and Stine Hjermstad-Kirkevik (Norway), now coming into her best form, third.
The full World Rankings lists for ski orienteering and also for foot orienteering can be seen by clicking on World Ranking on the home page of the IOF website, www.orienteering.org. For each individual athlete, past records and recent results in World Ranking events are shown on clicking the athlete?s name.
