World Trail Orienteering Championships – Day 1 in muddy conditions
Posted on | June 25, 2015 | Category: News

The World Trail Orienteering Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, began in special conditions due to the rain that started to fall directly after the model race the day before.
The rain continued the whole night, and made the paths very slippery and muddy in the morning when the TrailO Day 1 race started. The Senior Event Adviser had ordered longer maximum time for wheelchairs and that was necessary both for those sitting in the chairs and for the pushers who had a hard job.
Anyhow all athletes came back to the arena dirty but happy.
Nobody managed to solve all 26 controls right but Jānis Rukšāns (LAT) and Michele Cera (ITA) in the open class managed to have 25 correct. However, Rukšāns lost one point for exceeding the maximum time. Most competitors had problems with control 10 and control 12. In any case there will be a tough fight on Saturday when the second day of TrailO will take place.
In the Paralympic class Søren Saxtorph (DEN) leads with 23 points ahead of Ivica Bertol (CRO) and Pavel Shmatov (RUS).
The competitions continue with TempO qualifications on Thursday in Karlovac, about 50 km south of Zagreb.
