Pesu and Belomazhev best on long distance

The European Ski Orienteering Championships Long Distance mass start race was dramatic to the end.
Women had two long loops and one short one without forking. Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) started well, but kept losing time over the course. Tatiana Rvacheva (Russia) and Mervi Pesu (Finland) were all the time in the lead or close to the lead, and when the last loop began it was clear the victory battle would be between them. Neither of the women was able to decide the victory in the forest, and they arrived at the stadium at the same time. Mervi Pesu was then stronger in the sprint, taking the gold just before Rvacheva.
For a long time it looked like the victory in the men’s race would go to yesterday’s Sprint winner, Andrei Lamov, Russia. However, on the third and last forked loop, Lamov started to look tired. The gap to Stanimir Belomazhev (Bulgaria) and Oyvind Watterdal (Norway) grew smaller. At the end of the third loop, it was Belomazhev who came to the stadium first, and it started to look like it would be a Bulgarian day today.
Andrei Lamov was not at his best, and Belomazhev took the victory with a gap of 25 seconds before Lamov, who looked like he had given up on the victory fight already during the last loop. Lars Hol Moholdt won the bronze fight against his team mate Watterdal. An interesting result was Gion Schnyder’s sixth place – a podium place for Switzerland!
